Protest at the Charlemagne Prize ceremony: Ursula von der Leyen receives a “compass of values” to defend the Due Diligence Directive

Aachen/Berlin, May 29, 2025

Representatives of the Initiative Lieferkettengesetz, Lobbycontrol, FIAN, Global Policy Forum and Greenpeace presented Ursula von der Leyen with a symbolic “compass of values” at today’s Charlemagne Prize ceremony in Aachen. They call on the Commission President to defend and implement the Green Deal and the Due Diligence Directive.

Ursula von der Leyen receives the Charlemagne Prize, among other things, for her “impetus” for the Green Deal. The bitter irony: with the Omnibus I package, the EU Commission President herself is on course to reverse of core Green Deal projects, including the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive.

Now more than ever, it is important that Europe takes a clear stance: for our common values and for a reliable, sustainable economic policy,” explains Sofie Kreusch, coordinator of the Initiative Lieferkettengesetz. “The plans for undermining of the Supply Chain Directive would be a massive step backwards for the protection of human rights, the environment and the climate, but also for companies that are already operating sustainably.

The symbolic “compass of values” is intended to help von der Leyen find her way back to the Green Deal. “We are calling on the EU Commission President to correct her current deregulation course, which largely follows the demands of only a few powerful business associations,” demands Nina Katzemich from Lobbycontrol. “The EU will not become more competitive by cutting back on its good rules to protect people and the environment.”

The financial sector in particular will rejoice over its lobbying success,” warns Gertrud Falk from FIAN Germany. According to the EU Commission’s plans, it is to be definitively excluded from the scope of the EU Due Diligence Directive. „Financial institutions often knowingly enable human rights violations and environmental destruction through their business. The EU must no longer be a safe haven for these practices.“

Background:

The Omnibus I package proposed by the Commission aims to “simplify” the EU Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), the Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), the Taxonomy Regulation and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). In reality, however, there is a threat of radical cuts, particularly to the Supply Chain Directive, which obliges companies to respect human rights, the environment and the climate in global supply chains.

The background to this is a massive lobbying campaign by German, French and Italian business associations against any sustainability requirements – under the guise of reducing bureaucracy and improving competitiveness.
